Central HVAC systems are great for so many reasons. They cool or heat the whole house to the same temperature, and they do it efficiently and without a lot of noise. While these systems are considered easy to maintain, there are still things you do want to know about them. Some of the things you should know are covered here.

The compressor is located outside

The compressor unit for your central HVAC system is located outside of the home. It will generally be located next to one of the exterior walls on a concrete pad that protects it from shifting and moving. One of the benefits to having the compressor outside that you will appreciate is that you can control the temperature in your home without hearing more than the click it makes when the unit kicks on and the soft sound of the air moving through the ducts. However, since the compressor is outside, you do want to be sure you go out there when the system is running periodically to listen for odd sounds so you know when you need a repair tech to take a look at it.

The ductwork runs through the whole house

The ductwork is the metal 'tunnels' that go through the entire home to carry the air through the system so it can be cooled or heated depending on the setting and temperature you have selected on the thermostat. The air will then make its way through the ductwork where it is dispersed into the different rooms of your home out of registers. The registers should be open in each room or you can end up causing an imbalance in the system. When it comes to the ducts, make sure you have a technician come out should you begin hearing a loud swoosh or a whistle because this likely means there are leaks that need to be taken care of.

The thermostat plays an important role

When it comes to your central HVAC system, the thermostat plays a crucial role. The thermostat is where you turn the system on and off, and even switch it to the fan mode. It is where you tell the system whether you want heat or cold and where you tell it the exact temperature you would like the home to be kept at. Once set, the thermostat relays the messages to the rest of the system which should act accordingly. If you spot any problems with the thermostat, you need to have it repaired right away before you aren't able to continue using the system.
